What to expect in a Bowen Therapy session
Bowen Therapy consists of a series of precise moves on specific points of the body. These moves are light and can be done through clothing. There are frequent and i
mportant pauses between each series of moves giving the body time to benefit from each. Bowen Therapy is gentle, relaxing and non-invasive. Results can be remarkable, even from
the first session; often only a few sessions are needed to correct the
presenting problem. A specific problem can be targeted or
the body can be addressed as a whole.
Unlike many other hands-on therapies, the Bowen Technique does not use forceful manipulation. The technique addresses the soft tissue or fascia of the body which in turn effects the musculoskeletal framework, nerves and internal organs. The body's integrated response improves circulation and lymphatic drainage and aids in the assimilation of nutrients and elimination of toxins.
A Bowen session initiates a cascade of beneficial changes that continue for several days. Other manipulative therapies performed during this time can interrupt and undermine this process and the overall effectiveness of the Bowen Therapy. It is therefore recommended that the client wait a week before commencing any other manual therapy.
How Bowen Therapy Works
Bowen Technique moves generate impulses that travel along bands of fascia or connective tissue that run throughout the body. Research in the U.S. has shown that by applying gentle pressure to fascia a small electrical charge is created which has strong healing properties. Some Bowen moves are over intersecting and overlapping bands of fascia which stimulate all of the underlying tracts producing a very powerful response.1
Fascia interconnects bones, muscles, and nerves; it connects and surrounds the internal organs and interconnects every cell in the body. According to Dr. Mae-Wan Ho, fascia is highly sensitive and responsive to mechanical pressure, pH, electromagnetic fields and body fluid composition. It is this meshed network of connective tissue throughout the body that is believed to be the means of producing a coherent, whole body response to internal and external stimuli.2
